1F25 Post 1: Media Impact

Hey readers! I’m writing my very first blog today. It’s going to be about mass media because it’s an assignment for a university class. Hopefully it doesn’t sound too bad. Basically, mass media has a huge impact on my life. It confuses my view of the world because there are so many different things being said all the time. The media can be overwhelming. We get bombarded with it all the time, so we tend to miss the little things in life. The media doesn’t give us a chance to focus on anything... except for media. We see stories about celebrities on the 6 o’clock news which makes us question what is important in life. Is Dina Lohan getting a DUI more important than the suffering in Syria? I hear more about Miley Cyrus than I do about basically anything else. I’m not even too sure what’s actually going on in Syria right now, which is kind of sad. I know more about celebrity gossip than I do about actual news stories because that’s all I see when I turn on my computer. We get a lot of our info from the news channels about what is going on in the world but then I see documentaries such as “Out Foxed” which tells us that a lot of the info on these news shows are censored or simply not true. You don’t really know what to believe. But the news on television isn’t the only thing that confuses my view. Social Media is another thing. It has a huge impact on the world but I find it annoying and distracting. There are so many different social media sites that you have to keep track of such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram and Vine. If you’re not always connected, you feel like you’re missing out on something that is really important; well that’s how I feel. I think they just distract us. Social Media can be a good thing though. We are always kept up to date on what is happening in the world and around us, and we are able to find out things for ourselves that wouldn’t necessarily be on television or in the newspapers. My family is very into natural alternatives and organic products, so the media is very confusing when it comes to healing ourselves and being healthy. So many different messages are coming out about living healthy lifestyles, so we really don’t know what is true and what isn’t. I see commercials on television about how milk is really good for you but then I go on Facebook and look at certain health pages or I go on websites written by naturopaths that say we shouldn’t consume any dairy products. I get a lot of mixed signals from the media, so for me, mass media impacts my life a lot because it is so confusing.
